About the Event:
The art and science of video game design and development is a mature industry that offers significant opportunities for Hong Kong youth, entrepreneurs and investors.
Because of the availability of global infrastructure and standards, it is not just play for fun anymore, video games is an industry larger than Hollywood. The industry is an ecosystem that involves multiple disciplines, infrastructure, and business models that facilitate value creation from Hong Kong for the global marketplace.
This Seminar will introduce the medium of the video game from a business case perspective and as an academic subject leading to viable careers. You will get an overview of the industry, history, key figures and drivers, government strategic initiatives from around the world, and case studies.
The Seminar is aimed at investors, entrepreneurs, parents, young professionals and college students. The presentation will be followed by an interactive Q & A Session moderated by Mr. Gary Mar.
About the Speaker:
Dr. J.A. Rueda
Dr. Rueda is a Professor of Interactive Design and Game Development at SCAD Hong Kong, the University for Creative Careers. He has over 20 years of experience in R&D and commercialization, particularly in interactive and data networking products and services.
As an entrepreneur and scientist he focuses on technology applications and venture development in the communications, media and entertainment industries. He was chief executive producer for the Hong Kong teams that worked onIndiana Jones, High School Musical, Power Rangers, MySims Racing, and other console, online, and mobile.
He has served on the Board of Canada’s Advanced Networking Organization for Research Industry & Education, the Ensis Investment Venture Capital Fund Advisory Committee, International Standards Organization Technical Committee for Nano Technology, and other listed and private companies and not-for-profit organizations.
Dr. Rueda was the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce’s Director of the Year 2005, and nominated as one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40. For 8 years, he was Director of Data Networking, Operations & Research at the TRLabs in Canada, a consortium of industry, university and government. He has specialized in video games over the last few years and has mentored over 200 designers and developers, many of them with successful private practices.
He holds a PhD (1996) & MSc in electrical & computer engineering, MBA, registered Professional Engineer (Canada); over 70 publications & patents, including contributions to the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He has served as a Judge at the Stuart Clark International MBA Competition and various other entrepreneurship competitions. He has also held academic appointments in other design and engineering institutions in Hong Kong and Canada and has spoken around the world.

Mr. Gary G. Mar Q.C.
Alberta Representative in Asia
Gary Mar was appointed by the Premier of Alberta on October 14, 2011 as the Province of Alberta’s Representative in Asia. He leads the province’s strategic outreach efforts from his post in Hong Kong.
Gary most recently served as the Official Representative (Minister-Counselor) of the Province of Alberta to the United States of America in Washington D.C., from 2007 – 2011. Prior to this, Gary served 14 years as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the Province of Alberta, Canada. During his time as an elected official, Gary held several Cabinet portfolios – Community Development; Health and Wellness; Education; Environment; and International and Intergovernmental Relations.
As Minister of Environment, Gary served as co-chair of Climate Change Central, a public/private partnership formed in response to the international agreement on climate change. He also led efforts to create a new provincial park in Spray Valley to protect this unique and vulnerable area of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains.
As Minister of Education, Gary introduced First Things First…Our Children, an initiative aimed at ensuring that children can read well by grade 3, and focused on high standards for junior and senior high school students, keeping children in school and ensuring they have the needed skills when they graduate.
As Minister of Health and Wellness, Gary introduced a series of reforms to Alberta’s health care system, including a province-wide electronic health record system and an innovative pilot project to reduce wait times for hip and knee surgeries. As Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations, Gary led the highly successful Alberta at the Smithsonian project in 2006. This event was especially meaningful, since Alberta was the first Canadian province ever featured at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
Before serving Albertans as an elected Member of the Alberta Legislature, Gary practiced criminal, civil, corporate, commercial and real estate law in Calgary, Alberta. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1994, a honourary designation conferred by the Crown in Commonwealth countries and recognized by the courts.
Gary has a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) degree from the University of Calgary, and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Alberta. Gary and his wife Nancy have three children, Lauren, Jared and Mackenzie.
